It’s the name we sing every December \u2014 “O come, O come, Emmanuel” \u2014 and it may be the most staggering claim in the whole Christmas story. Not a name describing the baby’s character or destiny, but one announcing an almost impossible fact: God himself has come to be with us.<\/p>\n
Immanuel (also spelled Emmanuel) is a Hebrew name combining immanu<\/em> (“with us”) and El<\/em> (“God”) \u2014 literally, “God with us.” It first appears in a prophecy given to King Ahaz centuries before Jesus: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14).<\/p>\n When Matthew tells the Christmas story, he reaches back to this prophecy and applies it to Jesus, even pausing to translate it for his readers: “they will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God with us’).” The name isn’t a decorative title. It’s a declaration of who this child is.<\/p>\n The small word carries the whole weight. People could already imagine a God who was over them, or for them, watching from somewhere above. Immanuel says something more intimate and more shocking: God with<\/em> us \u2014 present, near, having entered our world and our condition.<\/p>\n This is the claim that sets the Christian story apart. In Jesus, God didn’t send a message from a safe distance; he came in person, took on flesh, and lived among us. The gap between God and humanity was closed from God’s side. That’s not a polite religious sentiment. It’s an astonishing thing to assert about the universe.<\/p>\n There’s a beautiful detail that’s easy to miss. Matthew opens his Gospel with this name \u2014 Immanuel, “God with us” \u2014 at Jesus’ birth. And he closes the very last verse with Jesus’ promise: “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” The whole Gospel is framed, beginning and end, by the same promise of presence.<\/p>\n Matthew is making a quiet but profound point. “God with us” wasn’t true only for one night in Bethlehem. It is the abiding reality of who Jesus is. Whatever you carry into this Christmas, the message isn’t “God is watching from afar.” It’s “God is with you” \u2014 and the name given at the manger turns out to be the promise that never leaves.<\/p>\nEverything turns on “with”<\/h2>\n
