You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” — Deuteronomy 6:6–7

Into the Word

Look at the ordinary moments named here. Sitting in the house. Walking down the road. Lying down at night. Getting up in the morning. God placed the teaching of the faith within the daily life of a family. It was not reserved for the tabernacle or the temple.

And He did not address this to priests. He addressed it to parents.

The verb behind “teach them diligently” (Deuteronomy 6:7) carries the sense of sharpening a blade. Saying the words once is not enough. They are repeated until they cut. Abraham did something like this long before Sinai: wherever he pitched his tent, he built an altar (Genesis 12:7–8). The altar stood beside a family’s tent, not inside a sanctuary.

We tend to move the other direction. A child’s faith goes to Sunday school, the Word goes to the preacher, spiritual care goes to a program. But before the church ever helped the home, the home was the first place of worship.

The Church That Fit in a Living Room

The early church began the same way. Luke writes that the first believers broke bread “in their homes” and ate “with glad and generous hearts” (Acts 2:46). Paul greets the church that met in Prisca and Aquila’s house (Romans 16:5), and again in Nympha’s (Colossians 4:15), and again in Philemon’s (Philemon 2). These were not overflow meetings. They were the church.

Archaeology backs this up. The oldest surviving Christian meeting place we know of, at Dura-Europos in Syria, was an ordinary house remodeled for worship around the 240s. Until toleration came in 313 and basilicas began to rise, the faith spread mostly through houses. What carried believers through persecution was not a building. It was a small group around a table.

Luther Wrote It for Fathers, Not Scholars

The Reformation reformed the pulpit. It also reformed the dinner table.

When Luther published his Small Catechism in 1529, he wrote it so that the head of an ordinary household could teach it to his own family. Not a pastor’s manual. A father’s. The priesthood of all believers took its most concrete form over supper.

The Puritans inherited this and called the family a “little church.” The Westminster Confession says God is to be worshiped daily in private families (21.6), and in 1647 the Church of Scotland approved a Directory for Family Worship. Richard Baxter, serving in Kidderminster from 1641 until the early 1660s, went house to house catechizing families with an assistant. He was convinced a church stands only as firmly as its homes, so he trained fathers to lead them.

What the Promise Said About Our Children

The ground under all of this is the covenant. God told Abraham He would be God “to you and to your offspring after you” (Genesis 17:7). At Pentecost Peter said the promise is “for you and for your children” (Acts 2:39). The jailer at Philippi heard it too, and his whole household was baptized (Acts 16:31–33).

None of this means the family replaces the local church. The church gathered under Word and sacrament is the body of Christ, and no household substitutes for it. The home is where what we receive there gets lived. Paul tells fathers to raise children “in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). A small church inside the church, and a church made of families. When one weakens, the other feels it.

In Our Living Rooms

Phones scatter a family sitting at one table into four separate worlds. Schedules eat the fifteen minutes we might have prayed. When sanctuary doors closed in 2020, it became clear which homes could worship in the living room and which had never tried. Psalm 78:4 says the glorious deeds of the LORD are to be told to the coming generation. That is the church’s calling. Before that, it is a parent’s.

Starting does not require much. Read a chapter. Sing one hymn, badly. Pray, naming each person out loud. A parent who confesses a wrong to his children and asks their forgiveness has laid a brick.

And not every home looks the same. The believer living alone, the single parent, the wife whose husband does not believe, all of them belong. For them the household church opens outward as hospitality, a spiritual family gathered in Christ. When the church sits down at those tables, “household” stretches past blood into “the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19).

Smartphones and algorithms scatter a family seated at one table into separate worlds. Crowded schedules rob us of time to pray together. When the doors of the sanctuary closed during the pandemic of 2020, it became plain which households were able to worship in their living rooms and which were not. Psalm 78:4–7 tells us to recount the glorious deeds of the LORD to the coming generation. That is a calling of the church, but before it is the church’s, it is the parents’.

The beginning need not be grand. Fifteen minutes once a day is enough: read a chapter of Scripture, sing one hymn, and pray, calling one another by name. The first question of the Westminster Shorter Catechism confesses that man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy him forever. Try memorizing it together at the table. A parent who confesses sin before his children and asks their forgiveness, or who blesses them at bedtime, is laying small bricks that make a home into a church.

Not every household looks like two parents with children. The believer who lives alone, the single-parent family, and the Christian married to an unbelieving spouse are all members of the church. For them the household church must open as the hospitality of a spiritual family joined in Christ. When the church sits down at their tables, the meaning of oikos reaches beyond blood to “the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19).

Before We Move On

When the church has been in crisis, recovery has often been struck from a small fire in somebody’s home. Under Rome. Through the Reformation. God has raised the next generation less through impressive programs than through a household bent over an open Bible.

So open it tonight. Nobody needs polished preparation. Clumsy is fine. Jesus promised to be present where two or three gather in His name (Matthew 18:20). Wherever the Word is read aloud, prayers pile up, and forgiveness passes between people, that house is already a church.

Joshua said it standing in front of all Israel: “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD” (Joshua 24:15). He said it about his house. May it begin in ours.

© 2026 Bible Portal. Free to share with attribution.
