But you have kept the good wine until now. — John 2:10

Into the Word

John tells us that “Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples” (John 2:2). He came the way any guest comes, and took His place somewhere among the neighbors and relatives. A village wedding in Galilee often lasted several days, and the family was expected to keep the table full the whole time. Partway through, the wine ran out. John chose this moment for the first sign of Jesus’ ministry (John 2:11), and the story shows why our own lives can go flat.

Invited, but Not the Host

The wine ran out at a party where Jesus was present. He was there as a guest. The family had planned the feast and bought the wine, and Jesus was one name on the list.

Our lives often look like this. We invite Him in. We go to church, pray before meals, and ask for His help when something goes wrong. The plans are still ours, though, and so is the schedule, and the whole celebration is arranged around what we want. He is welcome as long as He stays in His seat. Then the joy starts to thin, and we begin to complain. Why does my life feel so dry? Why is everything more tiresome than it used to be?

A feast built around ourselves can only serve what we brought to it, and what we bring always runs out.

The Groom Was Sitting Among the Guests

When the new wine reaches the master of the feast, he calls the bridegroom over and praises him for saving the best for last. He thanks the wrong man. John quietly adds that “the servants who had drawn the water knew” (John 2:9).

A chapter later, John the Baptist calls himself the friend of the bridegroom and points to Jesus as the bridegroom (John 3:29). Read with that in mind, Cana shows us whose wedding this really was. The One who could restore the joy had been sitting among the guests all along.

Scripture often uses this picture for Christ and His people. Paul told the church in Corinth that he longed “to present you as a pure virgin to Christ” (2 Cor. 11:2). Jesus wants more than a place on our guest list. He wants the faithfulness and shared life of a marriage, where we belong to Him and His word sets the direction of the house. That is what happened at Cana when Mary told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5). The wine came after the servants did what He said.

Better Wine the Longer We Stay

The master of the feast was surprised because he knew how celebrations usually go. The best is served first, and the quality drops as the evening wears on. A life that runs on our own resources follows the same pattern: early enthusiasm, then thinner wine with every passing year.

Jesus reversed that order, and He did it generously. The six jars held somewhere between 120 and 180 gallons, more wine than a village wedding could hope to finish. John is not describing a quick fix that got the family through one more evening. The best wine came last, and there was more of it than anyone needed.

That is what changes when Jesus is the bridegroom and not only a guest. The wine no longer depends on what we stored up at the beginning. He is the one who supplies it, so the passing years do not use it up. People who have walked with Him for a long time often find that a verse they have known for decades still feeds them, and that they love Him more now than when they first believed. Their circumstances have not always improved. Jesus Himself went from the wedding at Cana to the cross. The wine keeps coming because it comes from Him.

Before We Move On

Many of us have already done the inviting. Jesus is on our list, seated politely among the guests. The dryness we feel may not mean He has failed us. It may mean we have kept Him in the wrong seat.

Trying harder to make our own wine will not fix it. He is asking for the place that was always His, the bridegroom’s place, and for us to come to Him as a bride who belongs to Him. When we give Him that place, the master’s words begin to describe our own life.

He has kept the good wine until now.

© 2026 Bible Portal.
