A child’s obedience to his or her parents is one of the most important principles taught in the Bible. Parents are to be honored and obeyed as representatives of God Himself. Children who obey their parents will usually have happy and successful lives.
There are many benefits to obeying one’s parents. First, it is simply the right thing to do. Second, it demonstrates respect for authority. Third, obedience ensures a good relationship with one’s parents. Lastly, it sets a good example for other children.
Here are 5 bible verses that indicate how obeying your parents would also set you closer to the Lord our Father:
Ephesians 6:1-3 NIV
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
These verses signify that we can only live fulfilling lives if we love and cherish our parents. We should respect them and do our best to follow their guidance because it’s the correct thing to do as children. When we strive to become good daughters and sons, the Lord blesses us with a long and happy life.
Exodus 20:12 NIV
Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
This is the sixth commandment of God stating that children should always honor their parents. The purpose of this commandment is to show respect for those who have raised us and sacrificed for us. Through our parents’ care and wisdom, we’re likely to lead long, joyful lives in the world, so we should reciprocate all their support and affection.
Colossians 3:20 NIV
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
When we obey our parents, we are obeying God. This is because He has given them authority over us. When we submit to their authority, we are submitting to God’s will. Obeying our parents also brings us great blessings. We please the Lord and receive His approval. We also learn how to obey Him in all things.
Luke 14:26 NIV
If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.
While God instructs us to honor and obey our parents, He also reminds us that His commandments and his will go above everything and everyone else—even our parents and ourselves. This scripture is often quoted to encourage people to put their love for God ahead of all other loves in their lives. In order to follow Jesus, we must be willing to let go of anything that might keep us from Him. We must be willing to give everything up for Him. If by unfortunate chance your parents are not leading you towards a good and holy life, then you must still choose to follow the Lord’s teachings and guidance.
John 14:15 NIV
If you love me, keep my commands.
In this verse, Jesus is telling His disciples that if they want to show their love for Him, they need to obey Him. This is significant because it shows that obedience is an important part of our relationship with God. If we want to be close to Him, we need to follow His commands. This goes the same for our parents. In order to relay our love for our mother and father, we must honor them by listening to their advice and following their good guidance.
