As you approach the start of a new year, it’s important to reflect on the truths that keep us going through life’s ups and downs. And one crucial truth that comes from the Word of God: God is always with us, wherever we go and whatever we do. No matter what the future may hold, we can face it with hope, peace, and courage because of his presence among us. Take with you into the New Year these five realities of God’s presence:
The Presence of God is everywhere
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there, your hand will guide me; your right hand will hold me fast.” Psalm 139:7-10
God is everywhere at the same time. He is omnipresent. The reality that the Lord God created the whole universe and is infinitely more powerful than the universe provides the foundation for this incredible realization. If you believe that the God who created the universe also loves you and wants the best for you, then you can rest assured that everything that happens to you on Earth will work out for the best. You and I are never alone. Jesus assures us that he will accompany us wherever we go. The Holy Spirit also dwells within every true Christian.
The Presence of God transforms us
“Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” 2 Corinthians 3:17-18
When we seek God in prayer and daily Bible reading, the Holy Spirit restores us to the glory of the Lord (which is the image of God) in our hearts. The more time we spend in God’s presence, the more His Spirit conforms us to His likeness. These things take place as a result of God’s presence in our hearts.
The Presence of God brings about freedom and healing
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36
It is the nature of the Kingdom that those who are touched by the Holy Spirit will experience healing and deliverance. There are numerous instances in the Word of God where Jesus healed people during His ministry. “If I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you,” He said after healing a blind and deaf man (Matthew 12:28)
God’s Presence creates assurance
Some people are naturally anxious about what the new year will bring, and that’s to be expected. Is this year going to be just as difficult and painful as the last? The Bible, however, teaches us that hope, not fear, is the correct attitude to have. If we believe that God is with us, then we know that no matter what happens to us in the coming year, it will be for our good.
Anyone can experience God’s Presence
There are numerous examples of people encountering God, both in the Bible and in the present day. But you can never know when God will reveal Himself to you. It could be while you’re out walking, gazing up at the night sky, or watching a spectacular sunrise or sunset.
Conclusion
I pray that these promises of God’s ever-present love will encourage you as you begin a new year. Even though God is present everywhere, some people may have difficulty perceiving God’s Presence. Spending more time in prayer and daily devotionals with God and allowing the Holy Spirit to fill your heart will help you become more aware of His presence in your life.
