Oftentimes, whenever we hear the word grace, we immediately associate it with blessing, which is not wrong in itself. However, if we look deeper in the Bible, it is crucial to know the real meaning of the word before we use it casually in a Christian conversation.
Throughout the Scriptures, the main theme about grace is consistent – it is unmerited favor. It is freely given without fulfilling any prerequisite. It is the outward action of God’s love for us. Without it, God’s love would be abstract and unproven, which is not so different from the kind of love we show to others.
God did not need man to do something first before He sent His only begotten Son. When He saw the need for man to be saved, even though we are wicked and unholy, He still made the choice. That is grace.
