“You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.”Matthew 5:13 (NIV)
Salty Christians:
Do you know salt is essential to life and health, but when we use too much of it, salt becomes harmful to us? We need sodium for nerve impulses, muscle function, and maintaining water balance. It is present in our blood, sweat, and tears. And during Jesus’ time, salt was a valuable commodity used as currency.
Today, we use salt to flavor and preserve our food and our salt comes in many varieties, shapes, and color. Each one brings a unique taste to the dishes. Sometimes, people will add salt to sweet dishes like ice cream to bring out the richness of the dish.
Christian Salt
But what does Jesus mean when he calls us to be “the salt of the earth?” As a preservative, God calls us to bring the life-saving salt of Jesus to a dying world. Jesus meant we were to serve as preservatives, stopping the moral decay in our sin infected world. Like salt, Jesus is essential to the preserving us for an eternal life with him.
As a flavor enhancement, we can become the salt that adds joy and peace into the lives of those around us. And as we live in obedience to Christ, we influence the world for good, as salt positively influences the flavor of the food it seasons.
Losing Our Saltiness
God did not mean for us to sit in a salt shaker and wait for heaven. We need to be out in the world sprinkling salt everywhere we go. Without use, we can lose our saltiness. The world wants to rain on our faith and leave it ineffective.
Prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for using such simple things as salt to teach us about sharing the gospel. Thank you for allowing us to share our saltiness with those who need you. Help us always to remember to be Your salt and light in the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Reflect:
How can you become a salty Christian and preserve and flavor the lives of others?
