Can a Christian be saved if he commits suicide?

Although everyone may have different views on the question of whether a Christian can be saved after suicide, we must formulate some important principles on which to base our study on this question.

First, Christians should not commit suicide. The authority of life rests in the hands of God. He has arranged time for us to be born into the world and to leave the world. Anyone who commits suicide, or the recent propaganda of “euthanasia”, is a violation of God’s authority, and Christians should not do so by living in fear of God.

Second, suicide is equal to murder. Murder is sinful, so is suicide. Christians should not commit sins, much less murder.

Third, if a true Christian would commit suicide in a time of extreme weakness, he or she would be received into heaven (Jude 1:24). But we question the faith of those who take their lives or even consider it seriously–it may well be that they have never been truly saved.

That’s because God’s children are defined repeatedly in Scripture as those who have hope (Acts 24:15; Romans 5:2-5, 8:24; 2 Corinthians 1:10, etc.) and purpose in life (Luke 9:23-25; Romans 8:28; Colossians 1:29). And those who think of committing suicide do so because they have neither hope nor purpose in their lives. (Grace to You)

The suicide of a believer is evidence that anyone can struggle with despair and that our enemy, Satan, is “a murderer from the beginning” (John 8:44). Suicide is still a serious sin against God. According to the Bible, suicide is murder; it is always wrong. Christians are called to live their lives for God, and the decision of when to die is God’s and God’s alone.

May God grant grace and the psalmist’s perspective to each one who is facing trials today: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God” (Psalm 43:5). (gotquestions.org)
