Dear DM,
Longtime reader here. Thank you for your good work.
I recently saw a facebook post by someone that I think is misleading. It says what sinners many key bible figures were, and says God qualifies the called. I thought of you when I read it, and how you clarify God expects remorse and repentance.
In my opinion this post overlooks the remorse and repentance, and almost makes it seem okay to be a sinner regardless. Your thoughts would be appreciated, maybe a topic for a post.
Merry Christmas to you and your family, and best of luck with the new book.
Best regards,
“Untold”
Dear Untold,
I agree this is a bad meme for a cheater to use. It is like the cheater telling the world:
“See, I don’t have to repent or make restitution. God accepts me like God accepts these people in the Bible.”
It is a lie.
God requires repentance (see Luke 17:3). And any life built on lies is a life on a sandy and spiritually perilous foundation.
Now, if the context is different, then I can see this as a helpful meme.
For example, a discarded faithful spouse might find solace from this “cliff notes” version of those in the Bible. That is healthy, in my opinion.
I would not begrudge them that encouragement.
Generally speaking, it really boils down to context. A cheater who already has entitlement issues is saying something very different in posting this than a discarded faithful spouse wondering if God can use him/her again because they’re now divorced.
That is how I see it.
Hope that helps!
-DM
