God as Light Shines Brighter than the Sun and Moon 43-1-2

Revelation 21:23 tells us that the city has no need of the sun or of the moon. This indicates that in the new heaven and the new earth the sun and moon will still be there. The fact that the tree of life in the New Jerusalem yields its fruit each month also indicates that in the new heaven and new earth the moon will still be there to divide the twelve months. The sun will also be there to separate day and night into periods of twelve hours each….In the New Jerusalem, however, there will be no need of the sun or of the moon. The light in the city will be God Himself as the light of life (John 1:48:12).127

The gospel of John reveals that the Word, who is God, became flesh. In Him was the eternal life and this life is the light of men. Without Him as our life we are in darkness. Matthew 4:16 proclaims that when Jesus began His ministry, “The people sitting in darkness have seen a great light; and to those sitting in the region and shadow of death, to them light has risen.”

God in Jesus Christ is the light in us today and will be the light in New Jerusalem. This is the “light of life” (John 8:12). The sun and moon will be present in the new creation for the nations living around New Jerusalem but the city itself will have God in the Lamb, Christ, as the greatest light and hence have no need of the sun or the moon.
