“Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” – 1 John 5:12
This is one of the most beautiful verses in the Bible. Our verse today is the echoed verse of what Christ said in John 14:6 and John 3:16 that He is the only way to our salvation. There’s no doubt that indeed Christ is the only way to salvation, there’s no other way. Many verses have already proved that Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. As our verse says, “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life,” which really literally means that if we don’t have Christ, we don’t have a life.
Now, for Christians, we already know that Christ is the Son of God and that only through Him we are saved. In terms of life, although we have life literally since we are breathing, we are still living, we are still walking literally in this world, so what John is referring to this what he called life is our eternal life. After all, our life here on earth is not considered life for it is temporary. What the Bible always means when it is referring to life is our life found in Christ which is eternal and with God.
As for the non-Christians, many would be confused about what John meant for this life since they know that they are already living. Thus, everyone must know that what God meant by this life is the life in Christ who can only be found in Him and that it is eternal and unwavering. So, we must all realize that this verse is trying to knock some sense into our minds. Whether we are Christians already or still not a believer, we must understand that we need to have Christ in us so that we will have life.
However, we have also to understand that it is not just merely saying or claiming that we have Christ in us. Although believing and having faith in Him is not a description, it is an action word. We really have to have Christ in us to say that we will have life and we truly have to believe in Him. Now, here’s the catch, as people who truly have Christ inside them and who truly believe in Him, it will manifest in us. Therefore, we must always put in our minds that only through Christ we will have life.
May we always remember to know that Christ is the center of the Gospel. He is the good news and is the only salvation we have. Let us put in our minds that we must have life and that life is only found in Christ. Indeed, it is true that we all depend on Christ and if we don’t have Him, then we don’t have a life. Therefore, may we always remember to receive Christ as our Lord and Savior, and truly believe in Him.
