In these times of distress, with the war going on between Russia and Ukraine, oil prices hiking up, and with it the prices of consumer goods, I am just so glad I can truly rely on the Lord. You can too.
I rely, my whole being relies, Yahweh, on your promise.
6 My whole being hopes in the Lord, more than watchmen for daybreak; more than watchmen for daybreak
7 let Israel hope in Yahweh. For with Yahweh is faithful love, with him generous ransom;
8 and he will ransom Israel from all its sins.
Rely on the Lord
5 I rely, my whole being relies, Yahweh, on your promise
What does it mean to rely on the Lord?
To get a clearer picture of what it means to rely on the Lord, let’s compare these verses with different versions of the Bible.
Rely on the Lord, Various Translations
From New American Standard
I wait for the Lord, my soul does wait, And in His word do I hope. My soul waits for the Lord More than the watchmen for the morning; Indeed, more than the watchmen for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is lovingkindness, And with Him is abundant redemption.
Psalms 130:5-7 NIV
From the Good news translation:
I wait eagerly for the LORD’s help, and in his word I trust. I wait for the Lord more eagerly than watchmen wait for the dawn — than watchmen wait for the dawn. Israel, trust in the LORD, because his love is constant and he is always willing to save. Psalms 130:5-7 NIV
From the Amplified Bible:
I wait [patiently] for the Lord, my soul [expectantly] waits, And in His word do I hope. My soul waits for the Lord More than the watchmen for the morning; More than the watchmen for the morning. O Israel, hope in the Lord; For with the Lord there is lovingkindness, And with Him is abundant redemption. Psalms 130:5-7 NIV
From the New Living Translation
From The Message Bible
I pray to God—my life a prayer— and wait for what he’ll say and do. My life’s on the line before God, my Lord, waiting and watching till morning, waiting and watching till morning. O Israel, wait and watch for God— with God’s arrival comes love, with God’s arrival comes generous redemption. No doubt about it—he’ll redeem Israel, buy back Israel from captivity to sin. Psalm 130:5-8 NIV
Waiting and watching
So what does it mean to rely on the Lord?
It means waiting and watching; praying and counting on; trusting in and expecting for, putting hope in the Lord and in God’s Word.
We’ve been praying, claiming God’s promises but nothing is happening.
Watch and wait.
Wait patiently. Wait expectantly. Wait eagerly.
He may delay in coming and acting on our behalf.
But no doubt about it, He will always come to save us.
So let your whole being rely on the Lord, hoping and trusting in God’s Word.
Praying for Others
When you are relying and trusting on God, you can be sure that He will come to save you.
So you then can leave your worries to God and confidently turn around to pray for the needs of others around you.
Today, God has inspired me to pray for Ukraine and their cause of freedom, earnestly with fasting.
Like Queen Esther when she was battling against the evil that is threatening death and destruction to her people.
Seized with mental anguish, she had recourse to the Lord.
She prayed and fasted and asked her people to pray and fast with her as well. For 3 days.
I admit it will be challenging for me to do even a 24 hr fast.
I’ve been doing 12-26 hr intermittent fasting as part of my eating habit for months now but it’s been a long time since I’ve done a 24 hr fast.
For that, I have to rely on the Lord.
I just want to obey Him and pray earnestly for the war to stop, for the people of Ukraine to not lose hope and continue to rely on the Lord.
I also want to pray for the enlightenment of Russia with their President Putin and all the Russian people cause I’m sure they too are hurting.
No one ever wins in a war. Everybody loses. Even the winner.
So I pray God will come and save us all from this evil that is trying to divide and destroy us as a people of God.
May His loving-kindness penetrate the hardened hearts of men that all may turn to the Lord and rely on Him for help.
Now your turn
Do you feel the pressure and hardships as a result of the war that is raging right now in Ukraine?
Are you one of those directly affected, being a Ukrainian or Russian or do you have family there?
Take heart!
God will come and with Him is love and redemption. And He will come to save us. No doubt.
Just rely on the Lord.
- With your whole being, rely on the Lord and on God’s word
- Watch and wait eagerly and expectantly
- Pray also for the needs of others around you while you wait and rely on the Lord
Dear Lord,
With my whole being, I rely on You, Lord. I hope and trust in Your word. As I wait on You, I bring before You as well the needs of my brothers and sisters who are caught in war and suffering from the effects of war. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
This is it for now. Till next time.
