The House of God (3)

Hebrews 3:5 says that the history with Moses was “a testimony of the things to be spoken later,” that is, the New Testament things. Verse 3:6 continues, “Christ was faithful as a Son over His house, whose house we are if indeed we hold fast the boldness and the boast of hope firm to the end.”

God’s New Testament people are His house today. Eventually all His people from both Old and New Testament times will be His house, New Jerusalem.

First Corinthians 3:16 asks the Corinthians “Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” This living temple is the New Testament house of God.

In Ephesians 2:21 this house “being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord.” The word growing indicates that the temple of God is a living composition. Ephesians 2:22 continues, “In whom [the Lord] you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in spirit.”

Both 1 Corinthians and Ephesians tell us that God’s house/temple/dwelling place has a reality in spirit. This is our human spirit regenerated by and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The consummation of this spiritual reality is the New Jerusalem.
