The Son of Man Did Not Come to Be Served but to Serve – Matthew 20:20 Bible Study

Matthew 20:20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.

21 “What is it you want?” he asked.

She said, “Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.”

22 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said to them. “Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?”

“We can,” they answered.

23 Jesus said to them, “You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.”

The mother of Zebedee’s son came to Jesus and asked her two sons to sit on the Lord’s right side and the other on the Lord’s left in the Lord’s kingdom, but Jesus said that this position is not “giving” but ” acquired”. Then he said: “Do you want that precious position? Do you want a high position? Then you have to be more humble. Do you want a position of service? Then you have to serve others.” Because of the request of the mother of Sebedee’s son, the ten disciples heard this and were angry with the two brothers. They may think, “How can they want such a position? How can they want to be elevated? How can they be so proud before the Lord?”

25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.

Jesus said to the disciples who wanted to be elevated and served, they were like the ruling people in the world, and he said, “You have to be different from them.” “Whoever wants to be great” must become “employer (or servant, servant)” “, “Whoever wants to be the head” must be your “slave”.

28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Jesus said that his life is a life of service. It is difficult to mate one’s words to his deeds. It is extremely difficult for a person’s life to be a message to teach others. It’s easy to love a person’s thoughts, the music he creates, and the paintings he draws, but if a person can live as beautiful as a painting, as beautiful as music, and follow the life he teaches, then we can say This person really lived out the good of life. The Lord is such a person, and he follows the life he taught.
