Unlimited: Jesus Calms the Storm
Mar 21, 2024 1635
The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down, and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him” (Mark 4:38–41, NIV)!
Jesus tries to get some rest by travelling to the other side of the lake. In fact, he’s so exhausted that as they make the crossing, he falls asleep in the stern of the boat.
Meanwhile, a furious storm has come up, and the waves are crashing over the top of the boat. Many of the disciples are experienced in sailing these waters, but they’re terrified and afraid for their lives!
Jesus Calms the Storm
So far, in Mark’s story, Jesus shows authority over demons and every kind of illness. Now, Jesus demonstrates that he has authority over the basic laws of nature itself.
The disciples were scared out of their wits in the storm, and they woke Jesus up, crying out, “Don’t you care that we’re about to die?”
Jesus stood up and commanded the wind and the waves to be still. And they obey.
Jesus calms the storm.
We’re all facing storms in our lives. They might be relationship storms, financial storms, health storms, or even personal storms in your own mind.
Jesus says to you what he said to the disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Knowing what you know about me, don’t you have faith?”

Eli’s Reflection: Make time to go for a walk along the beach or through the bush, and as you walk, talk to God about the storm in your life that frightens you the most. Allow the Holy Spirit to fill you with the power and the love of Jesus. Allow God to still the storm in your mind, and to build your trust in him. The waves and the wind still obey Jesus’ name.
