Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? The farmer sows the word. Some people are like seed along the path where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown” (Mark 4:13-20, NIV).
The disciples did not understand the Parable of the Sower, so here Jesus explains it.
The Parable of the Sower Explained
This parable of the sower is about different soils. The different soils represent different kinds of people, and how they receive the word: The Good News about Jesus.
The seed is always the same, but the soils are different. Some soils are unproductive, while other soils help the seed produce a good crop.
Jesus’ story in the parable of the sower is true to real life. Some people won’t hear the word at all. Some people receive the word with enthusiasm, but it doesn’t last. Many people allow the things of this life to choke the things of the Spirit in their lives.
However, there’s also know people who embrace the Kingdom of God, and who produce a good crop.
Jesus wanted everyone to ask themselves, “Which sort of soil am I?”
So, which one are you?
Jesus gives us some reasons for why some soils might not produce a good crop. Some of them include trouble or persecution, the worries of life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desire for other things.

Eli’s Reflection: What type of soil are you? Is your heart tender to Jesus? What’s the number one thing in your life that is stopping you from being productive for God? Are you willing to give it up for the sake of the Gospel?
