Why not focus on Cheater repentance more? – Divorce Minister

Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.

Hebrews 12:15b, NIV

26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

Hebrews 10:26-27, NIV

While we have ONE verse about the root of bitterness, we have MANY scriptures about the need to repent of sin.

Yet the first impulse of many Christian communities is to feign concern for the faithful spouse developing a “root of bitterness.” They seem hyper-focused on judging the forgiveness process of the faithful party.

This emphasis seems more biblical than the way things usually go in Christian communities. Instead of a hyper focus on faithful spouse “forgiving” the Cheater, it makes more sound biblical sense to inquire about repentance efforts of the Cheater.

Now, I think people do not do this for very good reasons. It is awkward to confront a Cheater. It is much easier to beat down the already beaten down. Faithful spouses are easy targets as we are generally introspective folk.

The more godly thing to do, though, is to hold Cheaters accountable. The are the ones in imminent danger of hell fire according to Hebrews 10:26-27! That sounds most urgent to me.
