“For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment.” (2 Peter 2:4, NIV)
Reading this, many people might wonder: Peter was just talking about false teachers and false prophets in the church — so why does he suddenly bring up the sin of angels?
This is not a detour. Peter is pulling our vision deeper. He wants us to see that false teachers and false prophets are not the root of the problem. Behind them lies a more fundamental source — the fallen angels who sinned and are now imprisoned by God, awaiting judgment. The spiritual battle inside the church has never been merely a matter between people.
We Must Know the Spiritual World
Paul makes it unmistakably clear in Ephesians 6:12: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” What we face is not only the visible circumstances and challenges in front of us. Behind all of it, there is a real spiritual battlefield.
Jesus speaks even more directly in John 8:44, saying that the devil “was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” Satan is real, he is active, he prowls through the world looking for those he can devour, distorting truth and destroying lives.
This is why a mature Christian must have a clear understanding of this spiritual reality. Not so that we live in fear, but so that we stay alert — knowing what we are actually facing, and knowing where the true battle is being fought.
Who Are We?
But here is a truth that should fill us with confidence. The book of Hebrews tells us that Jesus is far above the angels, holding an authority that surpasses every spiritual power. And because of his redemption, we have become children of God, inheriting the authority of the Son. Just as Jesus conquered Satan, the same conquering power lives in us.
This does not mean we fight in our own strength. It means we stand and fight inside the one who has already won. Satan is already condemned, already awaiting judgment — just as 2 Peter 2:4 declares. His end is certain.
The Wisdom of the Cross — The Secret Satan Could Not Understand
So how did Jesus conquer Satan? Not through force, not through strategy, but through the cross.
In 1 Corinthians 1, Paul declares that Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God. The cross looks like foolishness to the world — weakness, failure, defeat. And that is precisely why it is the wisdom Satan could never comprehend. “For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” (1 Corinthians 1:25, NIV) Satan understands power. He understands temptation. He understands pride. But he does not understand self-giving love. He does not understand victory through suffering. He does not understand what happens when a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies.
This is why the life of the cross is our deepest weapon. Not striking back with force, not returning evil for evil, but living like our Lord — displaying the power of God through weakness, finding true life through laying it down. Our wisdom is hidden in Christ. Our strength is hidden in the cross.
So do not fear the spiritual battle — but do not underestimate it either. Know the one who has already conquered. Live in the wisdom of his cross. This is the foundation on which we fight, and on which we win, every single day.“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”— Ephesians 6:12, NIV
